Free workshops! Free curriculum! See below for details

Did you know you about our free workshops? Although this project has ended, we are offering Hawaii middle and high schools free workshops to help general & special education teachers integrate any of the following 3 curricula into their classes:

Just email Lisa to request a session any time on any island between March & September 2008. Sessions can be as short as 1 hour or as long as a whole day, and will be tailored to the needs of workshop attendees. A minimum 3 weeks notice is required.

Have you received our free SciHI Binder & Films Set?
At least one set has been delivered to all public charter, middle and high schools in Hawai‘i in 2007. Ask your principal and/or Science department head where it's hiding! If you need another copy, a few may be available. Also, free Disk Sets (CD & DVD or VHS) are available upon request and of course all materials, including updates, can be found here on this website. These are:

  • All Student Handouts are available to everyone, easily editable (just cut n' paste to your own desktop) & copyright free!
  • All Teacher's Notes & Answer Keys are available by a quick and simple log in (students cannot access answers... verification by Lotus Notes or phone call will be necessary)
  • The Search Function keyword listings will continue to be added with input from all curriculum users. Also, an Index and Glossary in the Welcome Folder provide help in finding our materials which support your curriculum.
  • The Discussion Board lets you see what our SciHI Professional Development Course participants are up to as they adapt SciHI materials to the science classes they are teaching now on Oahu and the Big Island.
  • New and Updated Files are being made to this website online as more teachers use the SciHI materials... your input, corrections and additions are welcome any time!

We hope these resources are beneficial to you, and welcome your input or request for help at any time (contact info is below)! Māhalo for your interest. :)

About This Project

Nā Hana Ma Ka Ahupua‘a, Science in Hawai‘i, is a 3 year Native Hawaiian Education project funded by a US DOE grant. The curriculum offers middle and high school teachers over one year of General Science Lessons centered on the Interdependence of Natural Resources in our watersheds, the Ahupua‘a of Hawai‘i.

Evidence-based components infused into the curriculum to help all students succeed include:

  • differentiated instruction for general and/or special education students
  • hands-on activities, concrete learning, projects & field trips
  • interaction with role models, kupuna/elders, community members & local scientists
  • adapted readings appropriate to student reading levels and age
  • locally relevant content focused 1st on community, island & state, then linked globally
  • culturally responsive teaching methods & learning styles

Hawaiian Punctuation

Hawaiian punctuation continues to baffle computers when online, so you’ll find kahako and okina are missing on parts of our Web pages. However, all student handouts should print with correct punctuation - if they don’t, please let us know by e-mailing us at the address below. Māhalo nui loa!
